Learn to live like Jesus through our Discipleship Year and Leadership College.
We want to develop followers of Jesus who are emotionally healthy, secure in the love of God, and equipped to pursue the Kingdom whatever sphere of influence or stage of life they’re in.
Discipleship Year (DY) is a one-year discipleship stream for people who want to invest in their spiritual formation and walk with Jesus whilst serving our church.
DY runs on Wednesdays and is open to people of all ages and stages of life (18+). It may be that you find yourself with capacity to give some time to church and you want to deepen your faith or you might be exploring a sense of call to leadership and ministry but you are early in that journey. Wherever you are, DY could be a great way to spend your next year!
You can find out more about what DY involves below.
📆 Oct ’22 – July ’23
🕐 Wednesdays, 09:00 – 17:00
📍 The Gate, Cardiff, CF24 3JW
College is a year-long intensive part-time programme for those experiencing a compelling call to leadership and seeking to invest in that call in an intentional and deliberate way. We anticipate that many students of the College will feel a call into pastoral ministry but for leaders in other industries and sectors, the year will be still be incredibly valuable.
There are a number of Open Evenings happening over the summer where you can find out more about the College and explore whether this is what God has in store for you.
College is run by VCUKI and you can find out more about it, the Open Evenings, and how to apply on their website.

More about DY
What will Wednesdays look like?
Most DY days follow a similar format: we spend the morning as a cohort with worship, teaching, and prayer. Then we gather around the table to eat lunch together with the afternoons spent serving the church in a variety of ways. It might be that you help develop curriculum for our Kids Church or that you help move furniture in our Storehouse Warehouse. You could find yourself helping one of the Site Pastors on a pastoral visit or helping the admin team in our office. Serving on DY will look different across the year but there’ll always be the chance to get plugged into the life of the church and help make church happen.
What will I be taught?
You’ll receive great teaching on spiritual formation, emotional health, leadership development, Vineyard Values, an introduction to theology and understanding the bible, and partnering with the Holy Spirit. You’ll have space to put the things you’re learning into practice and see God work through you across the year as you journey together with the DY cohort.
What is the time commitment of DY?
DY runs on Wednesdays from 09:00-17:00 (though the finish time can be flexible i.e. for picking up children from school). DYers will be key people in helping make our Sunday services happen and we ask that people serve at 3 out of 4 Sunday services in their site. There’ll also be books to read and spiritual rhythms to practice in the week (we anticipate that these will take around an hour a week though this may vary a little).
Is there an age-restriction on DY?
DY is open to people of all ages and stages of adult life (18+). You might be retired with some spare time or have just finished school. Maybe you’re a parent who has some time to give whilst your children are in school or you simply find yourself wanting to serve the local church and learn to live more like Jesus. We believe in intergenerational discipleship so wherever you’re at, DY might be the next thing God has in store for you.
What to do next?
We encourage you to talk to your Site Pastors about DY and then apply below. Once you have filled out an application form, you’ll have an informal interview with Paul Cruchley either in person or Zoom.
Through doing the year with church, I have gained a greater self awareness and an unashamed confidence in who God has created me to be. I’ve started a journey of learning how to fully love myself and God has been releasing big dreams in the process!
– Emily Seaborne
For many years after this I am going to look back and realise things that God has taught me in this year that I know would have taken many years to learn in themselves.
– Eli King
God has taught me so much about himself and the way he sees me and as a result of that I have learnt loads about myself. This year has been really pivotal in cementing a lot of my head knowledge in my heart and in growing in intimacy with God and confidence in my gifting.
– Seb Davies
I’ve learnt a huge amount about how much my emotions and how I deal with them feeds into my leadership. I’ve learnt so much about leadership in the church but also about leading in my workplace. This year has been hugely instrumental in how I’ve carried myself in my job.
